Kefir milk is a milk drink that has undergone a special fermentation process by microorganisms and according to research, is a booster of the immune system.
It has origins from eastern Europe and mainly in the Balkans and is consumed all over the world. Fermentation of kefir milk is carried out by various microorganisms that coexist in the culture. Like yogurt, kefir milk contains probiotics that help the immune system fight various infections.
Kefir milk and beneficial properties
It is already known that kefir milk helps reduce the symptoms of asthma and some allergies. But besides that, it contains substances that help in the fight against known viral diseases, such as the Zika virus, hepatitis B and C, the H1N1 virus, herpes, cold viruses, but even against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease.

In an article that was published in January 2021 in the medical journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, scientists from various countries announced their research results on the ways in which kefir milk helps the immune system:
- it signals the production of macrophages and, accordingly, phagocytosis
- it helps in the maturation of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes as well as those that produce antibodies
- it has an anti-inflammatory effect, mainly reducing the production of cytokines (interleukins 1 and 6) and interferon-gamma
It is noted that many losses of COVID-19 patients have occurred precisely because of the so-called cytokine storm due to excessive inflammation and reaction of the immune system. It is therefore obvious that kefir milk is a deterrent to the onset of a dangerous cytokine storm.
Include kefir milk in your diet
Experts recommend frequent consumption of kefir milk, especially during periods of epidemics or even at the current stage when the coronavirus epidemic is on the rise. The same goes for other products that contain probiotics, such as yogurt.
On the market there is ready-made kefir milk, but you can also prepare it yourself, procuring kefir cultivation grains from organic stores.
